1. O-Rings Are Simple, but Not Forgiving
An O-ring is a circular-section elastomeric seal installed in a groove and compressed to seal oil, water, air, gases and other media. It can be used in static or dynamic service. If material, size or groove conditions do not match the application, typical failures include cuts, swelling, compression set and extrusion.
Note: Selection principle: Start with the medium, temperature, pressure and motion. Then confirm material, hardness, cross-section, groove geometry and the need for a backup ring. Inside diameter and cross-section alone are not enough.

4. Five Steps from Duty Cycle to Part Selection
- Medium: list every contacting oil, water, gas, cleaner, additive and contaminant; avoid generic labels such as 'hydraulic fluid'.
- Temperature: define continuous, peak and cold-start temperatures. A short-term material limit is not a continuous-use rating.
- Pressure: identify nominal pressure, peaks, pulsation and clearance. High pressure may require higher hardness and backup rings.
- Motion: distinguish static, reciprocating, rotary and vacuum service. Dynamic sealing also needs a speed, friction and lubrication check.
- Size and groove: verify inside diameter, cross-section, squeeze, gland fill, stretch, chamfer and surface quality.
5. Installation and Failure Prevention
- Keep grooves, chamfers and mating surfaces free of burrs, sharp edges, particles and residue.
- Do not force an O-ring over an edge with a sharp pick; it can cut the surface or create local permanent stretch.
- For dynamic sealing, use compatible lubrication and avoid twist during installation.
- When extrusion, cracking, hardening, swelling or compression set occurs, review pressure, clearance, temperature, medium and material rather than replacing only the same size.
- Food, potable-water, medical and other regulated equipment requires approved materials and dedicated manufacturing processes.
